U.S. Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, recently welcomed the IRI John McCain 2024 Fellows to his Senate office. During the meeting, Senator Cardin shared his reflections on the enduring legacy of his close friend and colleague, Senator John McCain. He highlighted how McCain’s unwavering commitment to democratic values, human rights, and principled leadership continues to serve as a beacon for leaders around the world. Senator Cardin urged the Fellows to carry forward McCain’s legacy, emphasizing the ongoing relevance of these values, especially in regions where democracy is still taking root.
Following this, I shared with the Senator and his staff Somaliland’s critical role in global security and democratic governance. Senator Cardin was briefed on Somaliland’s significant efforts in countering terrorism, securing its coastal regions to protect global trade routes, and promoting democracy and freedom despite its challenging regional environment. Drawing on his extensive experience in international relations, Senator Cardin acknowledged the complexities Somaliland faces, particularly due to its proximity to volatile neighbors.
