Forging Economic Bridges: Inaugurating the Taiwan Business Association in Somaliland

It was a tremendous honor to be present at the inauguration of the Taiwan Business Association in Somaliland—an event brimming with promise and potential for both nations, Taiwan and the Republic of Somaliland. The establishment of this association marks a pivotal moment, underscoring our commitment to nurturing robust economic ties and fostering innovation between our two nations.

This new venture holds immense significance as it serves as a vital bridge, facilitating dialogue and creating a platform to nurture partnerships. It is poised to streamline avenues for businesses and investors from Taiwan and Somaliland, providing them with opportunities to explore new collaborations that will propel both economies forward.

During the event, I had the privilege to underscore the opportunities awaiting Taiwanese chip companies and tech firms by leveraging the strategic advantages offered by the Berbera Free Zone. I emphasized how this zone can serve as a launching pad for Taiwanese businesses to expand their exports across the African continent, solidifying their foothold in burgeoning markets.

Witnessing the convergence of enthusiastic businesses and visionary investors on this auspicious occasion reaffirms the potential for a promising collaboration between Taiwan and Somaliland. It’s inspiring to see such dedication and enthusiasm for forging partnerships that will undoubtedly shape the future landscape of trade and innovation.

SPEECH BY THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE MINISTRY OF TRADE AND TOURISM OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOMALILAND AT THE INAUGURATION OF THE TAIWAN BUSINESS ASSOCIATION IN SOMALILAND

Distinguished guests and esteemed delegates, I extend my warm greetings to all of you gathered here today at the founding meeting of the Taiwan Business Association in Somaliland. It is a significant occasion that marks the beginning of a hopeful journey towards enhancing trade and investment relations between the Republic of Somaliland and Taiwan.

In August, this year, Somaliland Trade and Business Delegation arrived in Taipei, Taiwan to sign Trade and Business Relations MoU between our two nations. The Importers and Exporters Association of Taipei (IEAT) was among the institutions that we visited when we signed the agreement – I want to appreciate their reception while we were in Taipei.

The signing of the Trade and Business Relations Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Taipei stands as an indication to the commitment of both Somaliland and Taiwan towards fostering deeper economic ties. This agreement serves as a foundation for fostering collaboration, easing trade barriers, and promoting bilateral investments between our nations.

We want to express our gratitude to Taiwanese companies like CPC, Central Sky International Trading Co., and others for coming to Somaliland and starting their operations as per the agreement signed by the two countries.

Somaliland presents a multitude of investment opportunities across various sectors ripe for development. The sectors of agriculture, extractives & energy, infrastructure, and technology hold immense potential for growth and offer lucrative prospects for investors seeking to explore untapped markets.

The role that the Taiwan Business Association in Somaliland can play is paramount in boosting trade and investment relations. This association will serve as a vital bridge, facilitating dialogue, fostering partnerships, and streamlining avenues for businesses and investors from both nations to explore new opportunities and collaborations.

Somaliland, indeed, holds the distinction of being Taiwan’s gateway to Africa. Its strategic location and potential as a trade hub offer unparalleled opportunities for Taiwanese investors and businesses aiming to expand their presence in the African market.

The Somaliland-Berbera Corridor is of paramount importance, not only for regional connectivity within Somaliland but also as a gateway to broader African markets. This infrastructure marvel presents a wealth of opportunities for Taiwanese investors and businesses, especially in the technology sector. Taiwan chip companies and technology manufacturing firms can leverage the Berbera Free Zone to export products to the rest of Africa, further strengthening their foothold in the continent.

In conclusion, let us embrace this moment as a catalyst for deeper collaboration and mutual prosperity between Taiwan and Somaliland. The Taiwan Business Association in Somaliland stands as a beacon, guiding us towards a future of shared success and growth.

Thank you for your attention and commitment to this cause.
