The Historic Israel Re-Recognition of the Republic of Somaliland

Israel’s official re-recognition of the Republic of Somaliland on 26 December 2025 marks a historic and consequential shift in regional diplomacy. After more than three decades of self-governance without international recognition, Somaliland has seen a major international actor formally acknowledge an existing political and institutional reality rather than defer to diplomatic inertia.

Somaliland restored its sovereignty in 1991 and has since built functioning state institutions, held competitive democratic elections, and maintained stability in a volatile region. Despite these achievements, recognition remained elusive. Israel’s decision breaks with that pattern, signaling that demonstrated governance, peace, and responsibility can translate into formal diplomatic engagement.

On the day of re-recognition, Somaliland’s President, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro), framed the decision as forward-looking rather than confrontational. In his exchange with Israel’s Prime Minister, he emphasized that Somaliland seeks recognition to deepen cooperation, promote regional and global peace, and participate constructively in international frameworks. He presented Somaliland as a bridge between Africa and the Middle East, grounded in stability and partnership.

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, responded by congratulating Somaliland’s leadership and framing the decision as aligned with Israel’s broader approach to engaging stable, democratic partners. He underscored Israel’s intent to move swiftly toward practical cooperation in areas such as agriculture, technology, health, and economic development, stressing that recognition should follow demonstrated realities on the ground.

The significance of the re-recognition was reinforced by Israel’s immediate diplomatic engagement, including the arrival of its Foreign Minister in Hargeisa. This step transformed recognition from principle into practice and affirmed Somaliland’s status as a sovereign interlocutor.

Beyond bilateral ties, the decision carries regional and global implications. Somaliland’s strategic location along the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea corridor places it at the heart of global trade and maritime security. Israel’s recognition implicitly acknowledges Somaliland’s long-standing contribution to regional stability and raises a broader question for the international community: should functional, peaceful states remain excluded indefinitely, or should recognition follow facts on the ground?

Ultimately, Israel’s re-recognition of Somaliland is not merely symbolic. It marks the beginning of a new chapter of pragmatic diplomacy—one grounded in mutual respect, shared interests, and the principle that proven stability and governance merit engagement.

Below is my congratulatory message on my my X @cabdirashed and an interview that I gave to Kulan TV to clarify negative narratives about the Israel’s recognition to the Republic of Somaliland.
